What is a rolled mattress?

Usually, rolled mattresses (also known as bed in a box mattresses) arrive neatly rolled up and packed into a box. This makes navigating the stairs with your new mattress a much easier task. And so, if you live in a block of flats or a high-rise apartment, a rolled mattress is actually ideal.

You can also store a rolled mattress in a box for up to 1 month, making it the perfect purchase for those waiting to move into their new home. If you relate to these scenarios, a roll up mattress might just be the ideal solution for you.

The benefits of a roll up mattress

A rolled-up mattress is rolled and vacuum-packed into a cylindrical shape to make transportation of the product much easier. Once you have unrolled your bed in a box mattress and left it to breathe for several hours, it will retain its usual shape.

Thanks to the way rolled up mattresses are packaged; they are a great idea for anyone who’s planning a house move and needs a new mattress. Plus, they’re much easier to transport from store to home which means you’ll be able to pick one up at your convenience or place an order with a fast delivery service.

Being able to store your rolled up mattress post-purchase also enables you to buy your new mattress ahead of time and store it until you have disposed of your old one. That said, it’s recommended you do not leave your rolled mattress in its box for more than a month. Doing so could result in damage.

Can you sleep on rolled mattress straight away?

Rolled mattresses are generally vacuum-packed and so, before sleeping on one, you will need to give it time to unfurl and plump up. How long you’ll need to allow your mattress to regain its usual shape will vary depending on the manufacturer. But all of our rolled mattresses come with manufacturer-issued instructions which we highly recommend you follow.

It can range from 6 hours right up to 48 hours for your new rolled mattress to fully expand. And, although most rolled mattresses are fine to sleep on during this time, you could find that it’s not as comfy as you expected until it has fully retained its usual shape.

What types of rolled mattresses are available?

Rolled mattresses are available in sizes ranging from small single to super king size mattresses. They are also offered in a variety of comfort levels and material combinations. Below are the different types of rolled mattresses we offer at Bensons for beds:

Rolled memory foam mattresses: If you’re a fan of plush support, a memory foam mattress could be ideal. A rolled memory foam mattress will conform to the natural contours of your body as you sleep and relieve pressure points resulting in a revitalising night’s sleep.

Rolled hybrid mattresses:Hybrid mattresses are generally a combination of springs and memory foam, gel or latex. The springs work to offer targeted support and even weight-distribution while the memory foam, gel or latex delivers premium support and a luxuriously comfortable sleep surface.

Pocket sprung rolled mattresses:pocket spring mattresses feature individual pocket springs. These springs are then wrapped in fabric pockets to allow them to move independently, which results in them responding appropriately to your various pressure points. Pocket spring mattresses are a great choice for every sleep position preference too. And rolled pocket spring mattresses come with convenient delivery and are easier to transport to your room of choice than standard pocket spring mattresses.

Rolled kids mattress: Rolled mattresses are ideal for a kid’s bedroom – especially if your children have a high-sleeper, a mid-sleeper or a bunk bed. Rolled mattresses are great for a bunk or high bed. At Bensons, we offer rolled kids mattresses in an array of sizes with a range of comfort levels and fillings to choose from.

How to unpack your roll up mattress

The whole point of a rolled mattress is to combine comfort with convenience. So, when you’re ready to unbox your rolled mattress, take it to the room it’s intended for and remove it from its box. Next, position it in place (either on the floor or on the bed frame it will live on) and remove the packaging. Do this using scissors rather than a knife. And take care not to damage your roll up mattress while removing the packaging.

Your new roll up mattress will then slowly start to regain its pre-rolled shape.

Be aware, it will take at least a couple of hours for your mattress to expand. And we recommend leaving it for as long as the manufacturer of your new rolled mattress advises before sleeping on it. You’ll find the manufacturer-issued information you need either on or within your rolled mattress box.

And remember, after your rolled mattress has been unpacked, it is not possible to roll it back up. Rolled mattresses are rolled and packaged using machines that have been specifically designed for this purpose.

Why choose a rolled-up mattress?

To put it simply, choosing a rolled-up mattress will make your delivery ten times easier. If you’re wanting it delivered directly to your door, sometimes larger mattresses such as a super king mattress will not fit through doorways or up the stairs. But navigating a bed in the box through the tightest of staircases is an easy task. A rolled-up mattress eliminates any problems and makes delivery a breeze.

If you'd prefer to take your mattress home yourself that's fine too, as long as we have it in stock at your local Bensons for Beds store. A rolled-up mattress is easy to navigate and manoeuvre so you should have no trouble setting it up in your own home. Not only do rolled up mattresses come in super king size, but they also come in a variety of other sizes from small singles, single and double.

What’s more, rolled-up mattresses are just as comfortable as standard mattresses – they just need some time to take shape. When you are ready to unpack the mattress, place it on your bed frame and remove all the packaging. Rolled up mattresses are suitable for all types of bed frames from stylish medal beds through to storage saving divan options. The rolled-up mattress will slowly begin to rise and should be in place after 4-6 hours. Rolled-up memory foam mattresses take longer and should be in full shape after 24 hours.

Is it time to upgrade your bed too? Our rolled up-mattresses work perfectly with ottoman beds, giving your room a some seriously spacious secret storage for you to utilise. We also have a great selection of bed frames to choose from if you’d rather keep under the bed free. Which bed in a box mattress firmnesses are available?

At Bensons, we do our best to appeal to the needs and wants of every customer and so, all of our mattress types come in a range of firmness ratings. This extends to our memory foam mattresses too

A soft rolled mattress is one to consider for lightweight side-sleepers – including those mini mes you’ve got running around! Soft mattresses are perfect for kids as they provide ample support and loads of comfort.

Medium rolled mattresses (or medium-firm rolled mattresses) are great for adult side-sleepers with an average height and build. Medium mattresses give you enough resistance to keep you properly supported during the night while being soft enough to cushion those key pressure points like hips and shoulders.

For back and front-sleepers, a firm rolled mattress could be a great fit. Firm mattresses give sleepers a firmer support helping to ensure that spines stay correctly aligned throughout the night. Some taller or heavier side sleepers may also benefit from the additional support provided by a firm mattress.

What is the best rolled mattress size for me?

Size matters. And for anyone debating which size rolled mattress they need, there are a couple of questions you’ll need to ask yourself. These are:

  1. Who will be sleeping in the bed the majority of the time?
  2. How big is your bedroom?
  3. How do you like to sleep – spread out, scrunched up, or somewhere in the middle?

At Bensons for Beds, we offer mattresses in every standard UK size. So, whichever sizes you’re considering, there’ll be plenty of options to explore.

Here’s a quick look at the different mattress sizes and who they’re best-suited to:

Single rolled mattresses. In the UK, a single mattress is 90cm x 190cm (or 3ft x 6ft3”). This mattress size has been specifically designed to sleep one adult comfortably. If you’re hoping to buy a rolled single mattress, you’re in luck! We’ve got several designs to choose from so that you can find your ideal sleep solution with ease.

Small double rolled mattresses. Small double mattresses allow a more spacious sleep for one or a compact sleeping solution for two. A rolled small double mattress measures 120cm x 190cm (or 4ft x 6ft3”).

Double rolled mattresses. Double mattresses are quite possibly the most popular mattress size in the UK. And a double rolled mattress is designed to sleep two people comfortably. At 135cm wide x 190cm long (or 4ft6” x 6ft3”), there’s a generous 15cm extra of mattress width to enjoy when you choose a standard double over a small double.

King size rolled mattresses. Mattress size matters. And this realisation is prompting many of us to upgrade from double to the roomier king size mattress. A king size rolled mattress measures 150cm x 200cm (or 5ft x 6ft6”), giving sleepers an additional 15cm of mattress width, and an extra 10cm in length when compared to a double. If you’re after a little extra space to spread out and roll over in your sleep, a king size could be ideal.

Super king rolled mattresses. Super king mattresses are the biggest UK mattress size. Boasting an impressive 180cm x 200cm (or 6ft x 6ft6”) of surface to sleep on, a super king rolled mattress gives two people plenty of room to starfish as they please and get a consistently great night’s sleep.
