What Deals do Most People Want This Black Friday?
As the nights draw in and temperatures drop, it can only mean one thing - Christmas is coming. But before you panic about Christmas shopping, don’t worry - Black Friday is almost here.
Each year, on the Friday after the US holiday of Thanksgiving, retailers all over the world slash their prices in a bid to bring you the best deals. And with the UK in a cost-of-living crisis, there's never been a better time to save yourself some cash.
With this in mind, we surveyed more than 1000 people across the UK to find out why people participate in Black Friday, how much they spend, and what type of products they're looking out for this year.
59% of Brits are hoping to bag a bargain this year
Although Black Friday originated in America, it has now become a staple in shoppers' calendars worldwide - and the UK is no exception. 59% of those surveyed said they'd be looking for deals this Black Friday. (1)
Our survey results also revealed that the younger generation is most keen to grab a bargain, with a whopping 80% of 25- to 34-year-olds hoping to get in on the discounted action. (2)
Of all the regions across the UK, Greater London had the highest percentage of bargain-seekers, with 70% of people hoping to get a good deal this Black Friday. (3)
How much will Brits spend?
The average Brit will spend just over £200 on Black Friday purchases. (4)
Our survey results also uncovered that men typically spend more than women during this event, with most men spending an average of almost £230, (5) compared to women who usually spend just under £190. (6)
We also discovered that Greater London was the region with the highest percentage of people splashing the cash, with 1 in 9 saying they usually spend more than £1000 during Black Friday sales! (7)
Top 3 reasons why people shop during Black Friday
To save money on Christmas shopping
This year, Black Friday falls on 25th November - exactly one month before Christmas, providing the perfect opportunity to save money on Christmas presents.
Reducing the cost of Christmas shopping was the main reason why45% of females (8) and 42% of over 55s participate in Black Friday. (9)
With most of us feeling the pinch more than usual this year, bagging a bargain during Black Friday could help make this Christmas that little bit more affordable.
To treat yourself
It’s not always easy to pluck up the courage to splurge on something you really want. Fortunately, Black Friday might give you the nudge you need.
24% of those surveyed said being able to treat themselves was the primary motivation for shopping during Black Friday. (10) And it seems men are the keenest to indulge, with 1 in 4 saying Black Friday gives them the reason they need to spoil themselves. (11)
We can’t deny that getting a sizeable discount on something you’ve had your eye on for a while could help appease some of that ‘post-purchase' guilt!
To upgrade your products
If you’re sick of your laptop turning itself off unexpectedly in the middle of a Zoom call, Black Friday might give you the excuse you need to buy something better.
Almost a quarter of those surveyed aged between 45 and 54 say their main reason for participating in Black Friday was to upgrade their products for better quality but at a fraction of their usual price. (12)

Electronics, TVs, and gaming
As we enter the run-up to Christmas, it’s no surprise that electronic devices are some of the most popular products people want to buy this Black Friday.
Men were particularly eager to get a good deal on these products; 46% said they’re on the lookout for a range of discounted electronics, such as laptops and mobiles, while 38% hope to buy a new TV, and 33% want reductions on gaming consoles. (13)
Beds and mattresses
1 in 8 Brits will be looking out for Black Friday bed deals this year, (14) with those living in the Southeast the most eager to bag themselves a bargain. (15)
Black Friday deals on mattresses, beds, and bed frames provide the perfect opportunity to invest in the quality bed you've always wanted. This could be the ideal time to upgrade to a luxurious super-king or treat yourself to a supportive, pressure-relieving mattress you’ll sink into night after night.
Homeware and kitchen appliances
With the colder seasons now upon us, Black Friday is the perfect time to invest in cosy autumnal furnishings and quality kitchen gadgets to help you whip up your favourite festive treats in no time at all.
That’s probably why more than 60% of those aged 55+ say they’re hoping Black Friday will give them decent deals on homeware, furniture, and kitchen appliances. (16)
Games and toys
Is it just us, or does the price of kids’ toys seem to go up every year? With finances particularly strapped this year, parents across the UK will be looking for ways to save money on their Christmas shopping this year. That’s probably why 37% of 25- to 34-year-olds say they’ll mainly look for deals on games and toys this Black Friday. (17)
Clothes and bedroom furniture

With the latest winter trends hitting the high street, it’s no surprise that 42% of those surveyed said they’d be spending their money on clothes this Black Friday. (18)
And let’s face it, with all those extra garments now filling up your wardrobe, you might also need to invest in additional storage space. That could be why 1 in 9 surveyed said they’ll be looking for deals on bedroom furniture this Black Friday. (19)
