Feng Shui Bedroom Layout: The Best Way to Rearrange Your Bedroom
To help you make the most of your sleeping space, we’ve spoken with experts to understand the best positions to rearrange your bedroom furniture to promote wellbeing and hopefully make for a better night’s sleep.
What is Feng Shui?
Adopted from Chinese culture, feng shui is the art of arranging to achieve balance and harmony within an environment. Simply put, it is the belief that by placing meaning and having intention in the way a space is organised an individual can harness positive energy and wellbeing from the natural elements.
The main principles of Feng Shui
The five basic elements of feng shui are:
- Earth
- Fire
- Metal
- Water
- Wood
Each has its own qualities, shapes and colours associated with it that can be harnessed into your bedroom decor to create visual balance.
Tips for the perfect Feng Shui bedroom layout
If you’re a beginner to feng shui, you may be feeling overwhelmed from the information overload. To make things easier, we’ve popped together some great first steps you can take to rearrange your bedroom space and declutter in a positive way, as advised by experts.
The commanding position
In feng shui, your bed represents you. This means it has to be in the commanding position of the room to be able to extract the best from how the furniture is arranged.
To do this you need to position your bed so that it is not directly in line with the door but still offers a clear view of it. This allows your subconscious mind to feel less vulnerable as you can see if anyone approaches but it can also represent a freedom for your future as you are ready for whatever comes next.
Interiors Therapy and Feng Shui expert, Suzanne Roynon said, “While some rooms might have only one possible bed position, others may afford the luxury of choice which provides the opportunity to fine-tune bed location to the specific energetic needs of the individual(s) sleeping in it. Using Feng Shui in a home transforms health, wellbeing, relationships and so much more to create a positive and lasting impact on lifestyle.”
Implement a headboard
A strong headboard can represent strength, especially for romantic relationships and beds shared with partners. Upholstered headboards are preferred in feng shui with placement directly near the wall for strong, stable support.
Declutter your room
If you’re someone who makes the most of storing things in view under the bed then this could be negatively affecting your bedroom’s feng shui. Minimalism is key, ensuring everything that is placed within the room is done so with intention. Make better use of drawers and wardrobes to reduce clutter and clear the space.
Harness the elements
Within feng shui, wood and wooden furniture represents growth, creativity and expansion. By incorporating wooden furniture into the bedroom you’ll be helping create a space of peace and stillness - like a countryside escape in the comfort of your home.
Bed positions to avoid for Feng Shui
Now you know the do’s of bedroom feng shui, let’s learn some of the big don’ts. Expert, Suzanne Roynon, said, “In Feng Shui we avoid placing a bed with the foot in a direct line to the door as this is said to deplete the energy of the occupants during the night. Keep ensuite doors closed to prevent good vibes draining away; a view of the loo won’t encourage sweet dreams!”
Away from the door
As previously mentioned, make sure your bed is not aligned with the door of the bedroom. In ancient times, this was seen as too similar to the way coffins would be carried out of the door, with the head or legs at the foot of the door. Definitely one to avoid!
In front of windows
Whilst it may be tempting to let the sunrise behind the head of the bed, according to feng shui the energy that enters the room via the window could disrupt the quality of sleep you get. If your room is too small to avoid this, then fear not! Simply adding a headboard can add extra strength to the bed to block out unwanted energy.
Facing the bathroom
Finally, in feng shui bathrooms are where energy leaves the home. Ensure your bed doesn’t face this energy as it can also disturb the wellbeing the bedroom provides. The placement of mirrors is a really handy way to reflect that bad energy back to the bathroom and keep your sleeping space safe.
When is the best time to rearrange your bedroom?
According to Suzanne Roynon, “If you’re having a big change around in the bedroom, it’s a great idea to use the two weeks after a full moon to clear, declutter and clean the space. This is traditionally a time of letting go of anything unsupportive. Get behind and under the bed and other furniture to tackle dust bunnies and cobwebs – these are signs of feeling stuck and restricted.”
Spiritual expert, Ibaal Honigman also agreed, “The new moon is always great for a fresh start, so rearranging as the moon first starts shining its new, pale rays is auspicious.”
If you’re looking for the best opportunity to harness feng shui in your bedroom, here are the dates for the new moons during 2022:
- 28 July
- 27 August
- 25 September
- 25 October
