Spring Into Action: A Guide to Deep Cleaning Your Bedroom

A clean and well-maintained bedroom is essential for a great night’s sleep. Clutter, dust, dirt and even mould can build up over the cold winter months when we often hunker down to get through the cold nights.
However, as the longer days and warmer weather of spring approach, it’s the perfect time to refresh your sleep space with a deep clean. Opening up the windows and letting that fresh air in is just part of it, but knowing how to deep clean your bedroom can make all the difference to how you relax and drift off at night.
This article outlines our tips to revitalise your bedroom with a spring clean, care for your mattress and extend the life of your bed - all to help you sleep better.
Declutter and Organise
The first step in any bedroom spring clean is to declutter, as a tidy bedroom promotes relaxation. Clear out unworn clothes, wipe down surfaces and vacuum under the bed to remove dust. If you can, move drawers, wardrobes and other furniture away from the walls so you can vacuum properly and give the skirting boards a good scrub.
Space-saving solutions like hanging organisers and dividers can maximise storage and keep your bedroom neat.
Organise your wardrobe & keep it that way
Is your wardrobe overflowing with clothes you no longer wear? Over time, shoes go missing, accessories become a tangled mess and getting dressed turns into a daily struggle.
Start by clearing everything out and only keeping what you love and actually wear. Then, organise by category and season, and use storage solutions like shelf dividers, hooks and drawer organisers to maximise space.
If you’ve got the space, why not pack away your winter clothes as part of your spring clean, and get ready for the warmer days ahead? Vacuum bags can be great space-savers while keeping your stored clothes safe from dust and damp.
Once your wardrobe is in order, maintaining it is key. A quick tidy every few weeks will prevent clutter from creeping back in, and regularly reassessing your wardrobe ensures you're only holding onto pieces that you wear. A great tip is, after doing laundry, always hang your clothes on one side of the rail. Those you wear regularly will naturally stay at that side as they’re worn and washed, but those you don’t wear will slowly move down the rail. If they make it to the other end, consider selling or donating them.
With everything neatly in place, getting dressed each day becomes quicker and easier.
Clear your bedside table
Our bedside tables can hold our phones, alarm clocks, books, cosmetics and anything else we need, but unfortunately, they can get cluttered. Try to keep anything you don’t regularly use in a drawer or storage box to free up space.
How to refresh your mattress
Over time, mattresses accumulate dust, dead skin cells and sweat, creating an ideal habitat for dust mites and bacteria. On average, a mattress can harbour around 10,000 dust mites, which may trigger allergies and isn’t a nice thought!
What’s more, we spend about 30% of our lives sleeping on our mattress, so we really should prioritise keeping it clean. To keep it in good condition, it’s crucial to establish a consistent cleaning routine. Not only does this help maintain a fresh and hygienic sleeping environment, but it also protects your investment.
For routine mattress maintenance, brush it weekly to remove dust and debris, and give it a thorough deep clean every six months. This involves removing any bedding, airing it out and using a soft brush to lift dirt. Airing it out should be enough to eliminate most odours, but sprinkling baking soda, letting it sit for a few hours, and then brushing it off will help with those musty whiffs.
If your mattress has stains or has had something spilt on it, blot the areas immediately and use a vinegar-and-soap solution with a microfiber cloth or toothbrush to scrub it gently. The quicker you can get to it, the easier the stain will be to clean.
Always allow your mattress to dry completely before remaking the bed to prevent mould growth and damp smells. By following these steps, you can extend the lifespan of your mattress and ensure a cleaner, healthier sleep environment.
Long-term mattress care
Extend your mattress’s life by rotating it regularly and using a mattress protector to shield against dust and spills as they happen.
Incorporating these simple habits into your wider bedroom spring cleaning will help you create a healthier, more comfortable sleep environment, allowing you to wake up refreshed every morning.
We recommend you make them part of any bedroom deep clean this year.
Caring for your bed frame
Your bed frame needs as much care as your mattress, but luckily, they tend to be less prone to stains and smells. However, different materials require different care.
Wooden frames should be dusted regularly and cleaned with a lightly dampened cloth, while metal frames can be refreshed with mild detergent. You can also use a dry cloth on metal bed frames to polish them, remove fingerprints and other marks, and bring the shine back.
If you have an upholstered headboard, you should gently vacuum it with an upholstery attachment to remove dust and prevent fabric wear. Carpet or upholstery cleaners can be used (with mild detergent!) to remove stubborn stains or give it a deep spring clean, but make sure you let it dry completely before putting new bedding on. If you do it first thing in the morning, it should be dry by the time you go to bed that night.
Clean bedroom, calm sleep
Giving your bedroom a thorough spring clean this year could help you refresh your sleeping space and create an oasis of calm. Dust and clutter can all accumulate over time without us realising it, but why not welcome the warmer weather with a fresh start for your bedroom?
