1. Handmade Christmas cards
There’s something wonderfully personal about receiving a homemade card. And this Christmas craft activity is one that works for all ages! So, gather some card (coloured or white – whatever you have in will work fine) along with a few festive embellishments like stickers, stamps, and glitter and get crafting.
Draw classic Christmas designs such as Christmas trees, snowflakes, or baubles — or use stencils if you’re going for a more polished finish. Then finish it all off with a handwritten message and these thoughtful creations are sure to bring a smile to your nearest and dearest’s faces this Christmas.
2. Mason jar snow globes
Fancy turning some ordinary mason jars into joyous winter decorations? Fill glass jars with faux snow and/or glitter, place a small figurine or decorative faux tree inside.
Top tip: Use a glue gun to fix the items to the inside of the lid for stability before sealing up the jar.
Then shake your jar (gently), and you’ll have a magical snow globe that’s perfect for a mantelpiece or windowsill display.
3. Paper chain garlands
Paper chains are a simple yet timeless decoration. Cut strips of coloured or patterned paper, then loop them into interlocking circles secured with glue or tape (or you can even use a stapler – whatever you have in will work fine).
Fancy giving your Christmas garland a modern twist? Use metallic or textured paper for your garland. Or you could also create alternating colours for an eye catching effect. Hang them around your tree, across doorways, or even draped over a bookshelf for a cheerful festive touch this Christmas.
4. Pinecone Christmas ornaments
Nature provides some of the best-loved crafting materials, and pinecones are a prime example. So, next time you’re on a frosty walk, gather a few. When you get home, clean them up and decorate them with paint, glitter, or even small beads. Attach a ribbon loop to the top, and you have a beautiful, rustic ornament to hang on your tree or add to a festive Christmas day table centrepiece.
5. DIY gift tags
Add a bespoke touch to your Christmas gift wrapping with handmade tags. You can do this using sturdy card or recycled materials such as old Christmas cards. Cut your card into simple festive shapes — stars, snowmen, or holly leaves all work really well — and then decorate with glitter, festive drawings, or metallic pens. Don’t forget to punch a hole at the top and thread with a festive ribbon that can be tied to your gifts.
6. Orange slice decorations
For a craft that looks and smells like Christmas, dried orange slices are an excellent choice. Sorry kids, this one is best left to the adults — or at very least, done under adult supervision.
Slice oranges thinly and dry them out in the oven at a low temperature. Once dried (and cooled) you can string them together with twine to create decorative festive garlands. Alternatively, hang each slice individually with ribbon for a natural tree decoration.
7. Salt dough decorations
A staple of all of our childhood crafting experiences! Salt dough is an easy and affordable way to make personalised Christmas ornaments. Mix together the following ingredients to create your dough:
- 250g plain flour
- 125g salt
- 125ml water (1)
When it’s made, roll it out, cut into shapes with cookie cutters, and bake until hardened. Then leave it to cool. Once cooled, you can decorate your salt dough Christmas ornaments with paint and seal with varnish to create a long-lasting keepsake.
Get creative and enjoy the festive spirit
Crafting is a great way to embrace the magic of Christmas while adding your own creative flair to the season. Whether you’re making decorations for your home or as gifts for loved ones, these ideas are sure to spark festive joy and leave you with treasured memories.
Now, grab a cup of mulled wine or hot chocolate, put on your favourite Christmas playlist, and get crafting!
