When it comes to mattresses, one size doesn’t fit all. Your mattress is there to support you, whatever your lifestyle is like, and whatever your sleep preferences are.
If it’s time for a mattress replacement, you might want to reflect on whether your current mattress is the best size and type for you, before going out and buying one of the same to replace it. Are your sleeps restful and refreshing? Do you feel supported, or do you wake up with aches and pains? Do you usually sleep the whole night through?
Your mattress plays a big role in how you feel during the night and when you wake up in the morning. If you feel like your sleep could be better, trying out a whole new kind of mattress could be the change you need to start sleeping well again.
An easy solution to feeling cramped in bed is to choose a bigger mattress. We cater to all needs, with a wide range of mattress sizes: small single, single, small double, double, king size, and super king size mattresses. In our Staples & Co range, we can even provide a bed which is 7 feet long! Double, king size and super king size beds are ideal if you share a bed with a partner – any smaller than that can feel a little bit too cosy, when you consider a double bed gives each people 2 feet and 3 inches of space each (less than the size of a cot mattress!).
Sometimes we can’t help moving around at night, and a larger mattress – a king size mattress or even a super king is ideal – makes it less likely that you and your partner will wake each other up, as you roll around and get comfy.
For babies, cot mattresses are best. Usually, the panel of the cot/cot-bed mattress is waterproof and sometimes this is detachable and washable too. In both cases, we’d recommend having a waterproof mattress protector too. This will help to give you peace of mind in the event of any accidents!
Make sure when buying a child’s mattress that it is the right width and height to fit your child’s bed. This is very important, as if there is extra room left over the mattress can move around. This can leave gaps where children’s arms, hands and legs may become trapped between the mattress and the bed.
Small single mattresses up to double mattresses are great for kids’ bedrooms, as they don’t take up too much room, but still give your child enough room to spread out. If you’re looking for a mattress for very young children, safety is the priority. So you’ll want to put a bit more research into the choice you make.
You can be assured you’re buying safe products from us. All of our mattresses comply with British safety legislation and the ones we make ourselves at our Huntingdon factory also comply with the British Kitemark for quality and safety.
If you’ve decided on a king size bed, finding the right mattress is next. Standard king size mattress dimensions are 150cm X 200cm in the UK. This makes them perfect for a medium or large-sized room. A king bed is balanced, luxurious, and a little bit grand – and any kind of king bed in a master suite or guest bedroom is always bound to impress.
A single mattress and bed is an ideal choice for a smaller room, as it doesn’t take up too much space. They’re perfect for children’s bedrooms and guest bedrooms, or even for adults sleeping alone too.
Choosing a single size mattress doesn’t mean you have to compromise on comfort. Our single mattresses are available in the full range of firmness ratings, and they’re made with unique, innovative qualities, too. Try an eco-friendly single mattress if sustainability is important to you, or opt for a temperature-regulating iGel single mattress to keep cool throughout the night. If you suffer from allergies, many a single mattress are hypoallergenic, too. This means it’s resistant to dust mites and other allergens that can affect your sleep quality.
A double mattress and bed makes for a stunning centrepiece in both larger and smaller bedrooms. Measuring in at 135cm X 190cm double mattresses can fit one or two people comfortably. A double mattress is also a great size to upgrade to as your child approaches their teens – growth spurts can come all of a sudden, and being well prepared never hurt anybody!
The size of your mattress matters more than you might think. Mattress size can impact:
Comfort: Having a bigger bed is essential for the comfort of broad and tall sleepers. Without one, they’d be having to sleep scrunched up every night. But bigger beds are also nice-to-have for those who like to stretch out under (or atop) the duvet.
So, now that you know why the size of a mattress is important, it’s time to decide which size is right for you.
When choosing you mattress size, there are three main things to consider:
If the mattress is for one person who’ll be sleeping on their own most of the time, you’ve got your pick of all the mattress sizes. Every mattress from small single right through to super king size should sleep you comfortably. That said, we’d recommend ruling out a small single if you’re mattress shopping for an adult. Upgrade to a full sized single mattress to ensure that you’ve got plenty of room to sleep soundly.
If you’re shopping for a mattress that will sleep two adults, your options are small double, standard double, king size, and super king. Small double mattresses are a great options for teenagers and adults sharing a bed once in a while. But, the majority of adults regularly sleeping in the same bed will benefit from an upgrade to a bigger mattress size.
The size of the bedroom also comes into play. For example, you wouldn’t put a super king sized mattress in a box room. If you did manage to get it to fit, there wouldn’t be room for much else in there. Curious about which mattress and bed size is the right fit for your bedroom? Check out our size guide. It’s got all the mattress measurements for each of the different sizes to help you make an informed decision.
And, if you need a little help with measuring your bedroom accurately, check out our blog post: Will My New Bed and Mattress Fit Upstairs? It’s got all the info you need to ensure that you’re measuring not only your bedroom itself accurately, but also the journey your mattress will make from your front door to your room of choice. Make sure that your delivery, set up, and product experience runs as smoothly as possible by ensuring it will fit before you buy.
Finally, onto your preferred sleep style. Whether you sleep on your side, your back, or your tummy gives you an indication of which mattress firmness you need. But how you sleep can tell you how much space you need. Be it in a starfish pose, curled up in a foetal position, or even the switcheroo – where you’re constantly moving and swapping positions all night long – mattress size becomes important. You need to have enough space to sleep in your preferred position, of course. So, bear this in mind when considering mattress size.
