What is a single bed?

A single bed is one of the smallest sizes of beds available. It has been specifically designed to sleep one adult comfortably. Single beds are a popular choice for children’s bedrooms, guest rooms, smaller bedrooms, and couples choosing to sleep separately.

One of the great benefits of a single bed is that it has a much smaller footprint than a double bed. This leaves a little more floor space which can be ideal in a child’s room as floor space is always handy when it comes to playing with toys. But this is equally hand for adults too. How big is a single bed?

A single bed is 3 feet (90cm) wide by 6 feet and 3 inches (190cm) long.

Single beds are great for maximising floor space, especially if your bedroom is on the small side. They are a foot smaller than a small double bed, which is the next size up, while still being the same length. They are 6 inches wider than a small single bed.

What size bedding do I need for a single bed?

A single duvet measures 135cm x 200cm. In the UK, single bedding is a standard size and so should be marked as such when you buy it.

Is a double duvet too big for a single bed?

A double duvet measures 79 x 79 inches (135 x 190cm) and is therefore much larger than a single bed.

However, some people quite like to have oversized covers on their bed and so, if you prefer a double duvet on a single bed, then go for it!

When should you put a child in a single bed?

There are no hard or fast rules when it comes to the best time to move your child from their cot into a single bed. It is different for every family and every child. Most children move from a cot to a single bed between 18 months and three years old.

You may wish to change to a single bed if your toddler is able to climb out of their cot or if they have grown too big to comfortably sleep there.
